THE PROJECT
Sustainable Basilicata hazelnut
PROFILE
Beneficiary: Private
Area: Basilicata
EU Priority: P3
Measures: 16
Intervention type:16.1
Total investment: € 250.000
COMPANY DESCRIPTION
The private beneficiary is the Basilicata in Guscio Business Network, a new association of farms that have started growing hazelnuts. The project enabled the application of new agroforestry systems. In the initial phase, a small mobile chicken coop was placed between the rows of hazelnut groves to evaluate the ability to contain the infestation and quantify the production results. The excellent results allowed the deployment of two prototypes of larger mobile chicken coops (100 birds for the inter-rows and 150 birds between the rows). Some of the entrepreneurs in the network have adopted the results by applying them in their nut groves, thus starting secondary egg production.
FUNDED INTERVENTION
CORILUS was based on a series of activities, all aimed at improving the productive sustainability of hazelnut. The project implemented a sustainable model for hazelnut cultivation, focusing on the definition of the most suitable areas, the dissemination of cultivation technologies with low environmental impact and the introduction of new approaches for the reuse of production waste. This model has been tested on numerous farms in different pedoclimatic sectors of the region and can therefore be reproduced by interested farmers.
