Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European council, will brief MEPs this Tuesday on the outcome of last week's special summit on the EU's long-term budget. At the summit political leaders failed to agree on the EU's budget for 2014-2020, but member states said they had at least made some progress in trying to eliminate their differences.
The debate on Tuesday will give MEPs and the political groups the opportunity to react to the European Council summit and explain their stance ahead of the new summit on this, which is likely to take place in January or February. The long-term budget cannot be approved with Parliament's consent.
