HNV farming has been a priority of EU rural development policy since 2005, but until now there has been no reference book on the subject. With the publication of High Nature Value Farming in Europe, EFNCP (European Forum on Nature Conservation and Pastoralism), with collaborators of IFAB Mannheim, have at last filled the gap.
This landmark volume is introduced by a joint foreword by EU Commissioners DacianCioloş and Janez Potočnik. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject and outlines how the concept can be applied in 35 European states, as described by local experts.

High Nature Value (HNV) farming is a relatively new concept that describes the farming systems in Europe of greatest biodiversity value. The environmental importance of HNV farming has been recognised for some time, but there has been very little research done on the agricultural and economic aspects of HNV farming or on the support provided bythe Common Agricultural Policy, which is the main source of public funding forenvironmental management of farmland in the EU.
Economic pressures have caused and continue tothreaten the abandonment or intensification of large areas of HNV farmland, with irreversible loss of the associated habitats and species of European importance for biodiversity. HNV farming is essential if the EU is to meet its 2020 biodiversity targets, but the policy context of recent years seems to befailing to halt the decline of HNV farming, with notable exceptions in certaincases.
This study is intended to contribute to theevidence base to inform the design of future EU policy for HNV farming. Go to the website (EN)
